When it comes to striking examples of Art Nouveau buildings in Antwerp, the residential area of Zurenborg offers some memorable facades that are definitely worth exploring.
Located on charming Cogels Osylei, Huize Zonnebloem – Sunflower House – is considered one of Antwerp’s most impressive Art Nouveau houses. Completed by architect Jules Hofman in 1900, the house stands out on the street with its imposing proportions. Do not miss the wide volutes spread along its white facade, as well as its two large golden daisies.
Colorful and opulent, Huis de Slag van Waterloo was built in 1905 by architect Frans Smet-Verhas. This incredible house -whose facade mixes Moorish and Italian elements- tells us the story of the epic Battle of Waterloo. You will be amazed by the large mosaic framing its two rounded windows on the top floor. The lucky owners of this unique house have, in fact, fully restored its facade, making it one of Waterloostraat’s key highlights.
To say that Huis van de Vijf Werelddelen - House of the Five Continents – is extravagant would be an understatement. Commissioned by a wealthy ship owner, and designed by Frans Smet-Verhas in 1901, this house is a masterpiece. There are several elements within its facade that are worth admiring, including a gorgeous balcony featuring an intricate wrought iron balustrade. However, its focal point the white ship’s bow, sticking out proudly along one of the corners of the building.
